Schubert’s last home – seine letzte Bleibe

Schubert’s last home in Vienna at Kettenbrueckengasse

The house is small; one could easily miss it if the flags on the outside didn’t catch your attention.

Franz Schubert spent the last weeks of his life at his brother’s apartment. The house, with a very nice renovated courtyard, was newly built when Schubert moved in and still was rather damp, which made his health deteriorate very fast. The staircase and hallways have not been renovated which creates a very authentic and intense atmosphere. You almost expect Franz Schubert to turn around the corner.

Entering the apartment and knowing that Schubert had lived and died right here is a very strong experience. The little museum presents some very personal items like letters and a list of expenses for Schubert’s funeral. The room where he died is small. A few pictures on the walls and a letter from Schubert, in which he asks for some books and tells how hard it is for him to even get out of bed, is all you will find in it.

Having so much of his music in mind while standing there triggered some strong feelings. Somehow the situation reminded me of the moment when I first entered the Forum Romanum in Rome. History all of a sudden had come down to the here and now.
