Zum KHM dazugehörig, befindet es sich in prominenter Nachbarschaft des Weltmuseums und der Nationalbibliothek.
Alles, was man im Ephesus Museum sieht, ist so an die 2000 Jahre alt. Viele Statuen und ein Relief in der Mitte des Raumes vermitteln einen guten Eindruck über diese antike Welt.
DIE SPHINX UND DER KNABE
In einer Ecke steht eine nicht allzu grosse, dunkelgraue Statue. Auf den ersten Blick sieht sie recht „unverdächtig” aus, erst bei näherem Hinsehen entdeckt man dann die Krallen der Sphinx. Sie bewacht Theben und in die Stadt kommt nur hinein, wer ein von ihr gestelltes Rätsel lösen kann. Und besagter Jüngling hat Pech. Rätsel nicht gelöst, also wird er getötet.
Und genau diesen Moment zeigt die Statue.
The Ephesus Museum, part of the KHM, is a rather small museum. Austrian archeologists have been excavating the city’s ruins since 1895 and the objects shown in the museum were discovered 1895 -1906.
At my recent visit a dark grey statue of a woman and a man caught my attention. As the woman had huge wings, my guess was that it represented a figure from Greek mythology. Walking closer, I noticed that her fingers looked like claws which I assumed meant “trouble” for the man. And it was. Background information, displayed on the wall next to the statue, explained the situation. In Greek Mythology, the Sphinx controlled who was allowed to enter Theben, an important town in ancient Greece. Visitors who wanted to enter were given a riddle. Only the ones who could solve the riddle were allowed to enter, the others were killed by the Sphinx. The statue shows the moment when the Sphinx kills a young man with her claws.
Die Sphinx aus dem Ephesus Museum, das ist keinesfalls eine von Rachsucht gezeichnete Figur, ebenso wenig wie die diversen Salomes aus dem KHM gleich nebenan. Man sollte sich bloss nicht täuschen lassen .😀
