Novemberpogrom 1938

    Uniqua Tower

On the night of November 9 – 10,1938, SA paramilitary forces of the National Socialists in Vienna carried out a pogrom against Jewish citizens. Lots of civilians eagerly helped the SA, smashing Jewish – owned shops and buildings and burning down synagogues. Many Jewish citizens were arrested, others killed or transported to camps.

In commemoration of the Pogromnacht, the light installation at the Uniqua Tower displays the names of Jewish citizens who lived in a house at this place in 1938 and suffered the consequences of the brutality of these days.

     Tempelgasse, 1020 Wien

Around the corner at Tempelgasse in the 2nd district, a huge screen on one side of a courtyard displays the synagogue as it looked  in 1938 before it was burned down.

A memory plate on the fence for the unnamed victims and flowers brought by people who care and wanted the victims to be remembered contributed to the very special atmosphere.
